Spring is almost here, and with the advent of the warmer weather, maybe you've been thinking about putting a pool in your backyard. Pools make for the ultimate backyard oasis, and families in particular love to go swimming in those hot and steamy months of summer. But where to begin? There are so many options out there. You have your in ground pools, which are beautiful, but can get expensive when you figure in how much you need in your budget. As well as the pool materials, you need to invest in landscaping, decking or patio, filtration and so much more. When you add everything up, it can really be a lot of money. Then there are the above ground pools, which cost less, but are just as much fun as their sibling, the in ground pool. So, what are the options for above ground pools and why are they such a great choice for a family?

Above ground pools come in two basic shapes, round and oval. With many different sizes, there is bound to be one perfect for your own backyard. An oval shaped above ground pool can be a good fit for a narrow yard, but actually holds less volume of water than it's round sibling. To get an idea of what size pool you need, it's a wise idea to measure your yard for length and width. Locate where you want your pool to go with a small stake and measure out from there.  A bigger pool may be nicer, but may not be practical for your needs. Don't forget you'll need to add some sort of decking or steps to get in and out of the pool too. This should be included in your measurements.

With the above ground pool, there's less to worry about when it comes to maintenance and installation. An in ground pool requires careful planning, land grading, metal and concrete installation, plumbing and the list goes on and on. An above ground pool is very easy to install and maintain. Simply set up the frame, add water and filtration, and you're ready to go swimming within literally a couple of days. The materials used in above ground pools are of the highest quality as well, they require very little upkeep to maintain them for many seasons of use. Typically, the above ground pool is made up of walls , either aluminum, steel or resin. Resin is the top choice for the longevity of the pool. Properly cared for, this material will last for many, many years.

Pool companies most often recommend a hybrid of steel and resin for strength and durability. In the hybrid pool, there will be a steel wall with resin upright supports and a top rail. Don't forget, the wider your supports are the stronger your pool will be. Lastly, when considering an above ground pool installation, you'll want to investigate what your pool will be sitting on top of. Some can be seated directly on grass, other may require a sand base or protective pad. You may also need to level the area you plan to install the pool. This can be an added cost to your budget.

So we've looked at the benefits, materials, shapes and sizes of the above ground pool. How does it shape up cost wise when compared to the in ground pool? The typical in ground pool can cost $15,000 conservatively and go up from there, sometimes hitting six figures if it's really tricked out. The above ground pool however, is much kinder to the wallet, costing maybe only a couple of thousand for the pool and minimum cost for any extras such as ground leveling, decking and ladder steps. The above ground pool is very affordable for the family on a budget. It's a quick, easy and cost effective way to get a pool in your backyard that you can enjoy for years to come.

That is a pretty cool idea. I have always wanted a pool, but haven't had the means to put one in ground (http://serenitypoolsokc.com). There are a lot of really good above ground swimming pool designs out there too.
